Know before you go

  • Season

Best from June to August. Outside summer, many high mountain roads and viewpoints close for snow, and daylight is short in late autumn and winter.

  • Local rules

Headlights must be on at all times while driving. Off-road driving is strictly prohibited to protect the natural landscape.

  • Activity level

Most stops involve short walks on paved or gravel paths. Some viewpoints require climbing stairs or walking on uneven natural terrain.

  • Currency

Norwegian Krone (NOK). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including for small purchases.

  • Power plugs

Type C and F plugs are used with a standard voltage of 230V.

  • Time zone

Central European Time (UTC+1), with Daylight Saving Time (UTC+2) from March to October.

  • Language

Norwegian is the official language. English is spoken fluently by the vast majority of the population.

Heads up

  • Book fjord ferries and popular activities ahead where possible, and allow buffer time for queues on scenic ferry crossings in summer.
  • Weather changes quickly around fjords and glaciers; carry waterproof layers and avoid exposed viewpoints or glacier edges in poor visibility.
  • This plan ends in Ålesund, not back in Bergen; arrange one-way rental car return or onward transport in advance.
