Know before you go

  • Season

Best in spring (March to May) and October. Summer is very hot in the canyons and around Las Vegas; winter can bring snow and ice to Bryce and the Grand Canyon rims.

  • Local rules

Inside the national parks you may drive only on established roads. Each park charges an entry fee (an annual America the Beautiful pass covers them), and Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is shuttle-only for most of the year.

  • Activity level

Moderate physical demand. Most viewpoints are near parking, but exploring the canyons involves walking on uneven terrain and steep switchbacks.

  • Currency

US Dollar (USD). Credit and debit cards are accepted at almost all locations, including park entrances.

  • Power plugs

    Type A and B plugs, 120V voltage.

  • Time zone

Pacific and Mountain Time Zones (UTC-8 and UTC-7). Note that Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time, but the Navajo Nation does.

  • Language

English is the primary language. It is used for all signage and services throughout the region.

Heads up

  • Advance reservations are required for Antelope Canyon tours and Zion shuttle buses.
  • Angels Landing requires a permit via a lottery system; check NPS website months in advance.
  • Temperatures swing widely by season and elevation: outside summer, nights at Bryce can drop below freezing while Las Vegas stays mild.
  • Carry plenty of water and keep your fuel tank above half when driving between Page and Monument Valley.
