  1. The California Corridor

We’re starting the clock here to beat the worst of the LA basin traffic.

    • San Diego International Airport

Pick up the rental and grab a coffee. We’re starting the clock here to beat the worst of the LA basin traffic.

    • Santa Barbara

Break for lunch near the State Street area. It’s the perfect halfway point to stretch your legs and see the Spanish-colonial architecture before hitting the long stretch of the 101.

    • Golden Gate Bridge

We're timing this for the late afternoon light. Driving across into Sausalito gives you that classic "Welcome to Northern California" feeling. Stop at the H. Dana Bowers Rest Area just across the bridge for the iconic photo op.

    • Santa Rosa

We’re crashing here for the night. There’s a solid Hilton Garden Inn in the heart of wine country that makes for a perfect staging ground for tomorrow's trek into the big trees.

  2. Giants and the Oregon Border

This is the "Redwoods" stop you asked for. Don't just stay on the 101; take the scenic bypass. You'll be driving right between massive 2,000-year-old trees. It’s quiet, cool, and smells like ancient earth.

    • Avenue of the Giants

This is the "Redwoods" stop you asked for. Don't just stay on the 101; take the scenic bypass. You'll be driving right between massive 2,000-year-old trees. It’s quiet, cool, and smells like ancient earth. [-123.9313, 40.3184]

    • Redwood National and State Parks

Further north, stop by Lady Bird Johnson Grove for a quick loop hike. It’s high enough in elevation that the fog often clings to the trees, making it feel incredibly moody and cinematic.

    • Eugene

Fly to Seattle/Everett is an option if you were exhausted, but since we're driving, we'll push to Eugene. It’s a great halfway point through Oregon. Check into the Hilton Garden Inn Eugene/Springfield to recharge for the final leg. [-123.0216, 44.0462]

  3. The Emerald Finish

We’ll skirt through the city. If you have time, grab a box of Voodoo Doughnuts for the road. The drive north on I-5 is straightforward but keep an eye out for Mt. St. Helens on your right if the sky is clear.

    • Portland

We’ll skirt through the city. If you have time, grab a box of Voodoo Doughnuts for the road. The drive north on I-5 is straightforward but keep an eye out for Mt. St. Helens on your right if the sky is clear.

    • Mukilteo Ferry Terminal

This is the coolest way to reach the island. You'll drive your car right onto the ferry. It’s a short 20-minute crossing, and you’ll get your first real views of Whidbey from the water. [-122.3050, 47.9502]

    • Whidbey Island

You've made it. Head up to Coupeville or Langley to explore the wharf. For your final Hilton stay, you'll actually need to head back toward the mainland or stay at the Hampton Inn in nearby Oak Harbor to keep that Hilton streak alive. [-122.6439, 48.2936]
