Acadia Slow Loop

A 5-day road trip through Acadia National Park and the quieter Mount Desert Island corners that make Maine feel like a secret.

Bangor International Airport → Hulls Cove Visitor Center → Bar Harbor Shore Path → Bar Harbor Village Green → Sand Beach → Ocean Path & Thunder Hole → Jordan Pond → Cadillac Mountain Summit → Sieur de Monts Spring → Northeast Harbor → Bass Harbor Head Light Station → Wonderland Trail → Southwest Harbor → Schoodic Point → Winter Harbor → Bangor International Airport

  1. Arrive, breathe in Bar Harbor

Start at Bangor International Airport and take it easy with the car pickup, coffee, and that first "we're really in Maine" feeling before driving toward the coast. The road gets prettier as you near Mount Desert Island, with forest, granite, and little flashes of water showing up more often.

    • Depart

Start at Bangor International Airport and take it easy with the car pickup, coffee, and that first "we're really in Maine" feeling before driving toward the coast. The road gets prettier as you near Mount Desert Island, with forest, granite, and little flashes of water showing up more often.

    • Hulls Cove Visitor Center

This is the cleanest way to ease into Acadia. Pop in for maps, check any current park road notes, and get oriented before you start wandering. If you still need an Acadia park pass, sorting it here saves you from fumbling at trailheads later.

    • Bar Harbor Shore Path

Stretch your legs along the water with Porcupine Islands out in the bay and old seaside homes tucked behind you. It's gentle, scenic, and perfect after a travel morning — the kind of walk where you immediately slow down without trying.

    • Bar Harbor Village Green

Village Green is an urban park in Bar Harbor, Maine, United States. Located centrally in the town, compared to the coastal Agamont Park about 0.18 miles (0.29 km) to the north, Firefly Lane bounds it to the north, Main Street to the east, Mount Desert Street to the south and Kennebec Street to the west. The park has a free public Wi-Fi network.

  2. Classic Acadia coastline

Head into the park early before the popular coastal pullouts fill up. Bring a warm layer even if town feels mild — the wind off the Atlantic can sneak up on you.

    • Depart

Depart is the twelfth Mandarin-language studio album by Singaporean singer and songwriter Tanya Chua, released by Universal Music on 13 August 2021. She collaborated with Carla Bruni and Ayanga, and also invited world-class composer Ricky Ho to produce and arrange the music.

    • Sand Beach

Start with bare feet in cold sand and the sound of waves bouncing between granite cliffs. You don't need to swim to enjoy it; honestly, most people just stand there, laugh at how cold the water is, and take in the drama.

    • Ocean Path & Thunder Hole

Walk the coastline rather than hopping viewpoint to viewpoint by car. The path gives you steady ocean views, pink granite underfoot, and a front-row look at Thunder Hole when the tide and swell cooperate. Even when it doesn't boom, the whole stretch is worth lingering over.

    • Jordan Pond

Jordan Pond is an oligotrophic tarn in Acadia National Park near the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. The pond covers 187 acres (76 ha) to a maximum depth of 150 feet (46 m) with a shoreline of 3.6 miles (5.8 km).

  3. Cadillac sunrise and quiet coves

It’s an early one, but this is the day to do it. Cadillac Mountain sunrise requires timed vehicle access during much of the busy season, so set that up in advance and bring a real jacket — the summit can feel completely different from town.

    • Cadillac Mountain Summit

Watch the sky brighten over islands, ocean, and dark pine ridges. After sunrise, don’t rush off immediately; the best part is often the half-hour after, when the crowds thin and the granite starts glowing.

    • Sieur de Monts Spring

Drop back down into a quieter, mossy side of Acadia. The spring area and nearby paths feel gentler than the coast, with birches, ferns, and that cool forest smell that makes you automatically lower your voice.

    • Northeast Harbor

Northeast Harbor is a village on Mount Desert Island, located in the town of Mount Desert in Hancock County, Maine, United States.

  4. The “quiet side” of Acadia

Today is the slower, less crowded Acadia — fewer tour buses, more fishing villages, spruce woods, and rocky edges where you can actually hear the water.

    • Bass Harbor Head Light Station

The lighthouse is classic Maine: white tower, dark rocks, spruce trees, and ocean spray if the weather is moody. The best views come from the rocks below, so wear shoes with grip and don’t rush the scramble.

    • Wonderland Trail

The Wonderland Trail is an approximately 93-mile (150 km) hiking trail that circumnavigates Mount Rainier in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, United States. The trail goes over many ridges of Mount Rainier for a cumulative 22,000 feet (6,700 m) of elevation gain. The trail was built in 1915. In 1981, it was designated a National Recreation Trail.

    • Southwest Harbor

Southwest Harbor is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. Located on Mount Desert Island, the population was 1,756 at the 2020 census. The municipality contains within it the villages of Southwest Harbor, Manset, Seawall, Wonderland, and Pemetic Hills.

  5. Schoodic farewell loop

Leave Mount Desert Island and drive to the Schoodic Peninsula, Acadia’s mainland section. It takes a little effort, which is exactly why it feels more spacious.

    • Schoodic Point

The Schoodic Peninsula is a peninsula in Down East Maine. It is located four miles (6 km) east of Bar Harbor, Maine, as the crow flies. The Schoodic Peninsula contains 2,266 acres (9 km2), or approximately 5% of Acadia National Park. It includes the towns of Gouldsboro and Winter Harbor. The peninsula has a rocky granite shoreline containing many volcanic dikes.

    • Winter Harbor

Winter Harbor is a town of 461 people (2020) in Maine. The town sits just outside the Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia National Park, and is due east of the town of Bar Harbor and Ellsworth. The Schoodic Peninsula is adjacent to the town, and has played an important role in the community’s economic and social development.

    • Bangor International Airport

Drive back inland and wrap up the loop. If your flight is later, this timing gives you buffer for a relaxed return, fuel, and bags without ending the trip in a scramble.
