The Ultimate California Scenic Loop

A comprehensive scenic loop through California's most iconic landscapes, from the granite peaks of Yosemite to the dramatic coastline of Big Sur and the vibrant culture of Los Angeles.

Route: San Francisco → Yosemite Valley → Monterey/Carmel → Big Sur → San Luis Obispo → Santa Barbara → Los Angeles
Primary area: California
✅ Current month (May) is in this region's prime season. PCH best Apr-May & Sep-Oct (clear, mild). Big Sur landslides occasionally close Hwy 1 Dec-Mar — verify daily.

One week, one rental car, and pretty much every kind of landscape California does well — city skyline, granite cathedrals in Yosemite, the raw cliffs of Big Sur, and SoCal sun to finish. Keep the tank half-full in the mountains and pack a light jacket even in July; SF and Yosemite evenings bite.

Money Savers
  1. 1One-way car rental SFO → LAX runs ~$150-200 drop fee but saves a whole day of backtracking
  2. 2Gas is cheapest in the Central Valley, most expensive in Big Sur (fill up in Monterey and again in Cambria)
Heads Up

Book Yosemite lodging (and peak-season entry reservation) 2-5 months ahead — it's the single biggest logistical bottleneck

Download offline maps for Big Sur and the Yosemite high country; cell service is patchy to nonexistent
