  1. KEF → South Coast Golden Circle

    • Keflavík International Airport (KEF)

      Grab your 4x4 rental (non-negotiable even in summer, some side roads are gravel), stock up on snacks and water at the airport grocery store before hitting the road.

    • Thingvellir National Park

      Walk the Silfra Fissure trail where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates split, skip the dive if you’re short on time but don’t miss the Öxarárfoss waterfall. Spend 2 hours here.

    • Geysir Geothermal Area

      Watch Strokkur erupt every 10-15 minutes shooting hot water 30m into the air, grab a hot dog from the on-site snack stand to warm up. 1.5 hour stop.

    • Gullfoss Waterfall

      Walk the upper and lower viewing platforms to see the 32m cascade that drops into the Hvítá river canyon, stay for golden hour if the sky is clear. 1.5 hour stop.

      End the day in this south coast hub, grab dinner at a local fish restaurant and stock up on supplies for the next few days.

    • Sólheimajökull Glacier

      Book a 2-hour guided glacier hike (reserve in advance) to walk on the tongue of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, the guides provide all the crampons and gear you need.

      Check out the hexagonal basalt columns and dramatic sea stacks, stay behind the warning signs — rogue waves here are extremely dangerous. 1 hour stop.

      Overnight in this tiny coastal town, the views of the Reynisdrangar stacks from the town overlook are unbeatable at sunset.

      Drive east through the Mýrdalssandur outwash plain, the wide black sand flat was formed by volcanic eruptions under the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

      Drive up to the lighthouse for views of the arch rock formation and puffin colonies (visit May - August to see puffins), the road up is gravel so take it slow. 1 hour stop.

    • Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

      Hike the easy 2km loop along the rim of the 100m deep canyon carved by the Fjaðrá river, the bright green moss and winding river below look straight out of a fantasy movie. 1.5 hour stop.

    • Skaftafell (Vatnajökull National Park)

      Do the 1 - hour easy hike to Svartifoss waterfall, the basalt columns behind the falls were the inspiration for Iceland’s Hallgrímskirkja church. 2 hour stop.

    • Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon

      Way less crowded than the nearby Jökulsárlón, you can walk right up to the edge of the lagoon to see floating icebergs and seals if you’re lucky. 1 hour stop.

    • Höfn

      Overnight in this fishing town, don’t skip the local lobster soup for dinner.

    Today’s drive takes you over the east fjords, the road winds along the coast so take your time and pull over at the viewpoints.

      Take a 1-hour amphibian boat tour to get up close to the icebergs (book in advance), then walk 5 minutes across the street to Diamond Beach where ice chunks wash up on the black sand. 2.5 hour stop.

      Pull over here for panoramic views of the east fjord coastline, there’s a small picnic area if you want to stop for lunch. 30 minute stop.

    • Seyðisfjörður

      This colorful fjord town is full of rainbow-painted houses and old wooden churches, walk the waterfront at sunset for views of the snow-capped mountains surrounding the fjord. Overnight here.

  5. Seyðisfjörður → Akureyri

    • Seyðisfjörður

      Drive north along the east coast, you’ll pass dozens of tiny fishing villages and remote fjords along the way.

    • Mjóifjörður

      Take the 30km detour into this remote fjord, it’s one of the least populated areas in Iceland and the views of the fjord and surrounding peaks are totally worth the extra 45 minutes of driving. 1 hour stop.

    • Vopnafjörður

      Stop for lunch in this tiny fishing village, the local bakery has amazing kleinur (Icelandic twisted donuts) to take with you for the road. 1 hour stop.

    • Goðafoss Waterfall

      Known as the “Waterfall of the Gods”, this 12m high, 30m wide cascade is one of the most iconic in north Iceland, walk the west bank viewing platform for the best views. 1 hour stop.

    • Akureyri

      Iceland’s second-largest city, often called the “Capital of the North”, walk the main street and grab dinner at a local brewpub. Overnight here.
