Mountain Peaks to Bayou Beats
A cross-country journey transitioning from the rugged peaks of the Rockies to the vibrant, humid culture of the Louisiana bayou.
Fernie → Billings → Rapid City → Wichita → Little Rock → New Orleans
Big Sky and High Plains
Cross the border early at Roosville to avoid the commercial truck rush. The drive through Montana is all about wide-open horizons and "Big Sky" views as you transition from the mountains to the plains.
Fernie
grab a heavy breakfast and a coffee at a local roastery before hitting the Crowsnest Highway south.
Helena
stretch your legs in Montana's capital. The Cathedral of St. Helena is stunning, and the downtown "Walking Mall" is perfect for a quick, non-fast-food lunch.
Billings
catch the sunset at the Rimrocks, the sandstone cliffs overlooking the city. It’s a great way to decompress after a long first day behind the wheel.
The Black Hills Detour
Today we dip into Wyoming and South Dakota. The landscape shifts from flat plains to the strange, dark pine-covered mountains of the Black Hills.
Devils Tower National Monument
this massive igneous intrusion is visible from miles away. Take the 2km loop trail around the base to really feel the scale of it.
Spearfish Canyon
skip the main highway for a bit and drive this limestone palisade canyon. It’s lush, cool, and has several roadside waterfalls like Bridal Veil Falls.
Rapid City
find the "City of Presidents" bronze statues on every downtown street corner before grabbing a steak for dinner.
Crossing the Heartland
This is your "power through" day. We are crossing the Great Plains of Nebraska and Kansas. It’s long, but the sunsets over the prairie are unmatched.
Badlands National Park
drive the Loop Road early. The eroded buttes and pinnacles look like another planet, especially in the morning light.
North Platte
a good spot to refuel. If you need a break, the Golden Spike Tower gives you a view of the world's largest rail yard.
Wichita
you’ve officially crossed into the lower Midwest. Walk across the "Keeper of the Plains" bridge at the confluence of two rivers; they light fire drums here at night.
Into the Ozarks and Piney Woods
The scenery turns green and hilly as you enter Oklahoma and Arkansas. You’ll feel the air get thicker and the trees get taller.
Tulsa
check out the Gathering Place, a massive world-class riverfront park, or see the Art Deco architecture downtown.
Ozark-St. Francis National Forest
the drive through the Boston Mountains offers winding roads and dense forest canopies. It’s a refreshing change from the straight lines of the plains.
Little Rock
walk the Junction Bridge over the Arkansas River for a view of the skyline before finding some southern BBQ.
The Deep South and the Delta
Final stretch. You'll cross the Mississippi River and head into the heart of Louisiana. The mossy trees and swamps tell you you’ve arrived.
Vicksburg National Military Park
high bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. It’s a somber but beautiful historic site with an old ironclad gunboat you can walk through.
Baton Rouge
see the tallest State Capitol building in the US. It’s a masterpiece of Art Deco design and offers a great view of the river.
New Orleans
roll into the Big Easy. Park the car, ditch the keys, and head straight to the French Quarter for your first bowl of gumbo.
- Bring a physical atlas or download offline maps; Montana and parts of the Ozarks have notorious "dead zones" for cell service.
- Pack a light jacket for the Rockies but keep your linen shirts handy for the Louisiana humidity!
